Summary
Potassium iodide is a thyroid blocking agent intended for use during nuclear emergencies involving exposure to radioactive iodine (radioiodine).
When taken as directed by public health officials, potassium iodide may help reduce the absorption of radioactive iodine by the thyroid gland. This product is intended specifically for emergency preparedness and should only be used during qualifying nuclear events.
This product is not intended for daily use or as a nutritional iodine supplement.
Ingredients
Each tablet contains:
- Potassium iodide — 65 mg
Other ingredients: Dicalcium phosphate, microcrystalline cellulose, vegetable stearic acid, croscarmellose sodium, vegetable magnesium stearate, and silicon dioxide.
Suggested Use
Take only as directed by a public official during a nuclear emergency involving exposure to radioactive iodine.
Take just before or shortly after exposure to radioiodine.
For children under 6 years old, crush or dissolve tablets into food or drink prior to administration. Do not allow children to swallow tablets whole.
- 2 months–3 years: Take ½ tablet daily
- 4–18 years old: Take 1 tablet daily
- 18 years and older: Take 2 tablets daily, or as directed by your health-care practitioner
Continue use only as directed by public health officials until the threat has passed.
Cautions & Warnings
- Consult a health-care practitioner prior to use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Consult a health-care practitioner prior to use if you have Graves’ disease or autoimmune thyroiditis.
- Breast-fed infants should receive iodine directly and should not rely on breast milk for protection.
- This product is not intended as a general antiradiation drug and is only effective for protection against radioactive iodine exposure.
- This product is not intended for nutritional use.
- Do not use if you are allergic to iodine or have iodine sensitivity, dermatitis herpetiformis, hypocomplementemic vasculitis, or a past or present history of hyperthyroidism.
- Do not take more often or at higher doses than directed by public health officials or a health-care practitioner.
- Repeated use may increase the risk of serious side effects and should be supervised by a health-care practitioner.
- Possible side effects may include inflammation of the salivary glands, gastrointestinal upset, or temporary rash.
- Seek immediate medical attention if signs of an allergic reaction occur, including swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, severe rash, fever, or joint pain.
- Store in a tightly closed container in a cool, dry place away from light.
- Do not use if seal is broken.
- Keep out of reach of children.
